A New Year
The holiday season is over and we are off to the races beginning a new year. What a better way to start off the new year than by reading Security in Review: our monthly security newsletter that brings you the latest and most crucial information related to cyber security. In our newsletter we present you with news, reports, reviews and helpful tips to help you on your cyber security journey. This month’s newsletter focuses on 2020's cyber security events that made headlines. Put on your seatbelt, it’s going to be a bumpy ride!
The Earn It Bill
The House and Senate are both pushing forward with the so-called “EARN IT” Act, a bill that will undermine encryption and free speech online. Attorney General William Barr and the DOJ have demanded for years that messaging services give the government special access to users’ private messages. If EARN IT passes, Barr will likely get his wish—law enforcement agencies will be able to scan every message sent online.
Solarwinds Hack
A massive computer breach allowed hackers to spend months exploring numerous U.S. government networks and private companies' systems around the world. Industry experts say a country mounted the complex hack — and government officials say Russia is responsible.
TIKTOK AND WECHAT BAN
US President Donald Trump and his administration have been attacking TikTok for months because of its ties to China. They claim the app is a risk to national security because the user data it stores on Americans could wind up in the hands of the Chinese government.
U.S GOVERNMENT WANTS YOUR DATA
The White House and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are asking Facebook, Google and other tech giants to give them greater access to Americans' smartphone location data in order to help them combat the spread of the coronavirus, according to four people at companies involved in the discussions who are not authorized to speak about them publicly.
AVAST ANTIVIRUS SELLS YOUR DATA
An antivirus program used by hundreds of millions of people around the world is selling highly sensitive web browsing data to many of the world's biggest companies, a joint investigation by Motherboard and PCMag has found
RUSSIAN HACK ATTACK
Eight weeks later, General Nakasone and other American officials responsible for cybersecurity are now consumed by what they missed for at least nine months: a hacking, now believed to have affected upward of 250 federal agencies and businesses, that Russia aimed not at the election system but at the rest of the United States government and many large American corporations.
Our Thoughts
We can learn from these events. Much that has occurred has been the result of improper security practices. Lack of due diligence on the behalf of many. And while due to the complicated nature of technology some of these attacks are unavoidable, the amount of damage that one may incur can be greatly reduced through proper security practices. As an industry practice it is recommended to receive a security audit for your business at least once a year. Blacksite Solutions can help you with all your security needs.
