The Blacksite Weekly Intelligence Report:

Tuesday Edition

American Phone Tracking Firm Demonstrates Spying Abilities on CIA & NSA

Virginia-based Anomaly Six was founded in 2018 by two ex-military intelligence officers and maintains a public presence that is scant to the point of mysterious, its website disclosing nothing about what the firm does. The company is one of many that purchases vast reams of location data, tracking hundreds of millions of people around the world by exploiting a poorly understood fact: Countless common smartphone apps are constantly harvesting your location and relaying it to advertisers. There is currently no law in the United States prohibiting the further sale and resale of that information to private sector and governmental clientele.

US Government Launches Bureau of Cyberspace and Digital Policy

The newly created Bureau of Cyberspace and Digital Policy (CDP) will be led by a Senate-confirmed Ambassador-at-Large. The bureau already has over 60 staff members with the majority coming from the State Department’s cyber coordination and international communications offices. The State Department plans to add 30 new positions to the bureau later this year. The CDP could grow even larger next year though as the department plans to request funding to support additional positions in its 2023 budget. The creation of the CDP is a key piece of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's modernization agenda.

FBI Searches Millions of American’s Digital Data without Warrant

A new report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) shows that from December 1, 2020, to November 30, 2021, the FBI used its Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act powers to search the communications of up to 3,394,053 Americans without a warrant. A total of 232,432 people were Section 702 targets in that period. The report's main thrust is about the use of FISA powers, which allow various forms of federal spying. For the first time, the report includes the number of queries using U.S. person identifiers run by FBI.
