Security experts warn Hafnium attacks are “highly reckless” and “dangerous”

WASHINGTON, DC – FEBRUARY 23: Microsoft President Brad Smith listens during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Capitol Hill on February 23, 2021 in Washington, DC. The hearing focused on the 2020 cyberattack that resulted in a series of major data breaches within several U.S. corporations and agencies and departments in the U.S. federal government.

At least 10 government-backed cyber-espionage teams are exploiting vulnerabilities on thousands of servers in over 115 countries, according to the security firm ESET. Officials say the American government is focused on what happens next to thousands of newly vulnerable servers-and how to respond to China’s hacking. Experts say swift action is needed to close the holes opened up by the China state hacking. The worst case is ransomware getting in and deploying it across the entire network, experts say. The hackers left web shells that can now enable others to get into those networks.
